The Art of Pilates
Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.
– Joseph H. Pilates and William John Miller, Return to Life Through Contrology
Pilates is an education system to body awareness. Rehabilitative for the muscles as well as a preventive system builds intrinsic strength while taking the pressure from the joints. Utilizing apparatus and mat exercises the Pilates Method consists of precise, controlled movements designed to lengthen and strengthen the muscles of the entire body focusing on the Powerhouse which includes the abdominal gluteal and lower back muscles. A strong powerhouse creates a firm foundation for movement, promotes better posture, more energy, flexibility, strength and reduces the risk of injury.
Pilates is the ultimate resource to mind-body fitness. In many cases it can improve arthritic and asthmatic conditions as well as various other conditions and chronic challenges. The system also develops muscular balance and core stability. It reduces stress, releases muscle tension and it improves balance and coordination. Pilates is not physical therapy, but it has many therapeutic applications and it can aid in the prevention and post-rehabilitation of injuries and the elimination of lower back pain. Joseph Pilates was a visionary who believed and advocated the mind-body connection and the need for cultivating both for reaching full potential as well as overcoming physical adversities. He created over 500 exercises on the mat and the apparatus, many of them in flowing sequences and in conjunction with breathing. For almost a century the clients and students of Joseph Pilates have found his teachings to be sound, effective, and adaptable to the changing attitudes about body and fitness.
